Maintenance Is a Priority
When it comes to a pressure-treated lumber deck, a little TLC goes a long way in terms of appearance and longevity.
Spring Cleaning
Spring rains invite mold growth on your deck. To prevent mold and mildew from staining (and rotting) the wood, give the deck a good cleaning each year. To wash your deck, remove debris from between the boards using a putty knife or other blunt object. Then, sweep the deck and give it a good scrub with a soft bristle brush and a deck cleaning solution.
Sealing the Deck
To protect a wooden deck from moisture and sun damage, seal the wood each spring. Most sealants take a few days to dry, so it is recommended that you seal the deck during a period of warm, dry weather. After cleaning the deck and allowing it to dry thoroughly, lightly sand the surface. Then, replace missing screws or nails, and repair any other areas of concern (large splinters, damaged boards, etc.). Lastly, apply a thin coating of stain over all wooden surfaces. For the best coverage, we suggest applying two coats.
Fall Maintenance
Throughout the summer, keep an eye on the deck for signs of rot or damage. Then, in the fall, remove debris, furniture, and planters to avoid discoloration and mold growth over the winter. Additionally, trim back bushes and trees at the end of the season to slow mold and moss growth.
